Maritime Patrol Aircraft Training
Whilst existing MPA-capable forces need to maintain their edge, more and more nations are now adding MPA-capability to their maritime security forces by using a new generation of diverse and flexible ISR aircraft of varying sizes such as the Airbus Military C295, ATR 72 MP, Boeing P-8 Poseidon, Saab Swordfish and the Dassault Falcon 900 MPA.
CTL has a network of MPA professionals with experience of operating world-wide. Our MPA training solutions already add value for nations embarking on MPA programmes for the first time, Defence/Commercial companies developing sensors and platforms for MPA capability and Commercial Maritime Businesses and Maritime Security firms looking to understand the role airborne surveillance, whether manned, unmanned or from Space, can play in enhancing their business.
Training Specialisations
Our highly experienced Subject Matter Experts (SME) possess extensive instructional experience across a wide range of MPA and ISR disciplines. These include training offerings in MPA capabilities & operations, Anti-Submarine Warfare, Anti-Surface Warfare and Visual Target Recognition - each of which are detailed further at the bottom of the page.
Our training style is inclusive and inter-active, ensuring that all participants gain the very most from their course and retain as much as possible that is relevant to them. Where relevant training includes use of an innovative MPA Sensor Emulator, which allows a tactical crew to train and practice procedures in exploiting and coordinating multiple sensors simultaneously.
Training Design & Training Management Systems
We have benchmark experience in developing flying training to Defence Systems Approach to Training (DSAT) for the UK MOD (JSP822), including in capabilities well beyond Maritime Patrol and ISR. DSAT offers a top down approach to training design that allows a clear understanding of what skills are required to achieve a capability need, in what potential environment and to what standard. Furthermore, we partner with Aquila Learning to offer a Training Management System - ALaRMS - designed with a Systems Approach to Training for complex environments at its heart, along with Assurance and Risk Management capability. This system is already in use by the MOD helping prepare for the imminent arrival of the P-8A Poseidon to RAF Lossiemouth.
List of Courses
The following list details our standard courses – click on each tab for details - and contact us to discuss tailored, client-specific courses. We also provide a ‘Train the Trainers’ package to allow a client to receive preliminary training services before they then take on their own training once comfortable with their new capability.

MPA Capabilities & Operarions
This course is an introduction to Maritime Patrol Aircraft that is suitable for any client beginning to explore MPA capability. It is also particularly helpful for any business/organisation that may require MPA to support or protect its operations, so they may better understand what the platform can offer.
Typical course content includes the following (not an exhaustive list):
-
MPA roles
-
Friendly Assets
-
Sensors, Communications & Avionics
-
Airframe Performance & Equipment
-
Basic Procedures
-
Future capability
Anti-Submarine Warefare
Submarine Surveillance Operations/Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW)
This course uncovers much of the mystique that surrounds the cat and mouse game of the underwater environment. It is aimed at professionals who are going to become involved directly with operating or designing an ASW capability for an MPA so that they better understand its potential. Parts of the course are relevant well-beyond submarine hunting and have commercial applications, particularly in the Energy exploration market.
Typical course content includes the following (not an exhaustive list):
-
Oceanography (can be tailored to a market well beyond submarine surveillance, including the Oil & Gas market)
-
Submarine Technologies
-
Acoustics
-
Multi-Static Active (MSA)
-
Audio Interpretation
-
Magnetic Anomaly Detector (MAD)
-
Above Water Sensors in ASW
-
Self Defence/Counter detection
-
ASW procedures and mission resolution
Anti-Surface Warfare
Surface Surveillance Operations/Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW)
This course shows the breadth of tasks in which surface surveillance platforms can be employed, even if they have no underwater surveillance capability. It is aimed at professionals in businesses and organisations, both defence and commercial, involved in activities from low key coastal surveillance and Search & Rescue, to Long Range patrols against surface vessels with potentially aggressive intentions.
Typical course content includes the following (not an exhaustive list):
-
Scenarios - Surface Fleet Surveillance, Counter piracy, EEZ Patrol (ie Fisheries and counter-pollution, Embargo Operations, Search and Rescue etc
-
Radar Procedures
-
ESM Procedures
-
Vessel Identification, Sensors and Contact Recognition
-
Sonobuoys in Surface Surveillance
-
Communications Management
-
Self-Defence
-
Surface Surveillance Procedures and Mission Resolution, incl Third Party Targeting, Apprehension etc
Visual Target Recognitions
Copernicus Technology has a unique skill-set in training for Visual Target Recognition. This remains a vital Intelligence Gathering and Identification capability to ensure the correct targets are recognised and engaged legally at the right time: a typical example is shown below. The RAF P-8A Poseidon force, other nations and commercial customers are already customers.
We provide training material tailored to the customer's need, whether classroom-based or for self-learning, including:
- Submarines (incl mast recognition)
- Military Surface Vessels
- Merchant Vessels
- Aircraft, both Military and Civil
- Military Land Systems
- Worldwide library
- All at Open Sourse (OSINT) level, which customers can add to further themselves to upgrade classification
- Regional Maritime Security Briefs can be included
