Copernicus Technology wins new MOD training contract for RAF P-8A Poseidon fleet

Published 18 Dec 2018

In 2018 the MOD's Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) organisation awarded 2 contracts in support of RAF Poseidon Maritime Patrol Aircraft to Copernicus Technology Ltd.   In May Copernicus Technology won the contract to design and deliver a full range of Visual Recognition Training Packages covering surface, submarine and airborne units that aircrews are likely to encounter and will need to accurately identify whilst on maritime operations. On Tuesday 18th December they officially handed over a full Visual Recognition Training package to senior representatives of the RAF Poseidon MRA Mk1 program, pictured below.

Copernicus Technology also recently won a further DE&S contract to deliver the Training Management System for the RAF Poseidon MRA Mk1 aircraft. The RAF Poseidon fleet is the first customer for this Training Management System, which was designed around the requirements of the UK’s Defence Systems Approach to Training (DSAT) and is equally applicable to industries requiring complex training for high-risk environments such as Oil & Gas and Rail.

Michelle Sanders, senior MOD team leader responsible for the delivery of the RAF Poseidon fleet, said:

“The expertise and agility of small businesses such as Copernicus Technology are essential to the success of these large capability programmes. It is also excellent to see businesses local to RAF Lossiemouth playing such a key role in the future of the region.”

Roo Hornby, the Copernicus Technology Business Development Director, said: “We are incredibly proud to have won these contracts to support the RAF Poseidon Maritime Patrol Aircraft, close to our HQ in Moray, Scotland. We are delighted to be delivering the Visual Recognition Training package well ahead of schedule, because this will ensure the first crews to start their training in the New Year with the US Navy in Florida are fully prepared. We look forward to continuing our support of this contract over the next 3 years."

He went on to say “The Training Management System we and our partners are delivering will play an essential role in the analysis, design and delivery of training to ensure all staff operating and supporting the aircraft exploit it to its full potential whilst operating to the highest standards of safety and assurance.”

Wg Cdr James ‘Snoopy’ Hanson was also present for the presentation of the Visual Recognition Training package. As the first Poseidon Squadron Commander, Wg Cdr Hanson commented that

“Visual Recognition is a vital skill amongst our crews to ensure all our operations are conducted safely and accurately. The exceptional material provided by Copernicus Technology is both timely and of great value to my teams.”

This week the team at Copernicus Technology have been celebrating the momentous milestone of 10 years in business.  Speaking in between mouthfulls of birthday cake, Managing Director Giles Huby said "This is an important opportunity for everyone in the company to reflect on what we've achieved in the last 10 years.

It's more than just a number.  We established the company whilst the global recession was still developing and we tackled the aerospace & defence market - which has extremely high barriers to entry - and we succeeded.

That's not bad going for a bunch of ex-Royal Air Force engineers and aircrew, and this particular bunch is an amazing team who have successfully delivered contracts for customers includng the UK MOD, foreign defence departments and global brand aerospace and rail companies.  We love delivering solutions to customers that help them to get it right first time, whether 'it' is rapidly finding the source of intermittent faults in Eurofighter wiring or in Chinook avionics, or training customer staff in how to eradicate the No Fault Found problem, or analysing their maintenance & repair data to identify where to prioritise new tools and techniques, or training overseas military aircrew in how to get the maximum performance out of a Maritime Patrol Aircraft and its crew.  We remain as ambitious, tenacious and agile as ever and can't wait to see what the next 10 years will bring".

All of the directors and staff at Copernicus Technology would like to pass on their sincere thanks to all their customers, partners, shareholders and families for the continued support they have provided us with over the years.  To find out more about the company follow this link.

Robert Jenrick, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury and MP for Newark, joined Moray MP Douglas Ross on a visit to Copernicus Technology on the 28th of August.   The visit came after the MPs attended discussions on the Moray Growth Deal, which is designed to boost the economy for the local area.  With Copernicus Technology actively engaged with the global aerospace industry, the company typifies the ambition and expertise already found in Moray and the visitors saw this first hand whilst discussing the company’s products and services with the staff.

Following the announcement of Copernicus Technology’s recent success in securing an MOD contract to provide new Visual Recognition training packages for the RAF’s P-8A Poisedon aircrew, the visit allowed both MPs to see examples of the training materials for themselves. They were given background and insight into how the training will be used and their importance for future crews, both at RAF Lossiemouth and beyond.

XST visit Copernicus Technology 2018 08 28Copernicus Technology also demonstrated their other area of expertise as Europe’s leading experts in Intermittent Fault Detection to their guests.  Staff showcased the state-of-the-art test equipment, which is used to combat the No Fault Found problem in electronic and electrical systems and is proven across aircraft, vehicle and defence platforms in the USA and Europe.  Pictured here, Jim Cockram, Copernicus Technology Chairman & Technical Director (left) briefs Mr Jenrick (centre) and Mr Ross (right) on the features and benefits of the Voyager Intermittent Fault Detector (VIFD)

Robert Jenrick MP said:

It was a pleasure to meet the enthusiastic team at Copernicus Technology.  Small, specialist businesses like theirs are increasingly vital to the MOD's supply chain because of the niche expertise and agility that they bring, along with offering excellent value for money for the taxpayer.

Douglas Ross MP said: “The Moray region is already renowned for global exports of food and drink, and this visit to Copernicus Technology shows that the area is home to other types of businesses who are equally ambitious. In fact, a group of these companies recently shared an exhibition stand at the Farnborough International Airshow, successfully highlighting the aerospace, space and technology capabilities in the Highlands & Islands. It's also great to see a local business is already involved in preparations for the P-8A's operational activities at RAF Lossiemouth.”

Giles Huby, Copernicus Technology Managing Director, said: “We are delighted to have hosted Robert Jenrick MP and Douglas Ross MP.  It was a fantastic opportunity to show them that Moray has aviation and technology expertise in abundance, and to highlight how our own products and services will benefit P-8A operations when they commence in the region, and provide maintenance savings for aerospace and technology customers in the UK and internationally.”

[You can read more about the visit in the HM Treasury press release, however note that Copernicus Technology are currently providing training materials for the RAF P-8A crews to use not, as described in the HM Treasury press release, equipment for the aircraft.]
